I thought it caught the best parts of My Neighbor Totoro for a 20-something audience! Mike. Ocean Waves is a high school love story set in Kochi, Japan. She carries the memories of her childhood with her and these flash back as a parallel story to the present in an unbelievably delightful way! We truly see her (very sharply observed and funny/poignant)childhood and what made her character. How many films can make eating a pineapple such an utterly fascinating,touching and meaningful scene?! This film is basically the story of a 27 year old woman (NOT a middle aged woman!) who is starting to think that life is passing her by and starts thinking of what she really wants and is important in life. The fact is, this film packs in so many genuinely clever, poignant and laugh out loud funny observations on adult and child life I am really surprised it is not more well known. I would agree with many of the comments already expressed, especially the use of animation to express the exhilaration of childhood joy. ![]() It truly defines "adult anime" in the best sense of the word. An English dub was planned in 2008, which wouldve included the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Thomas Jane, Keiko Agena, Alexis Boesel, and Chris Carmack, but was never fully produced and released. It is one of the most amazing films I have ever seen, anime or not. ADR involves recording dubbed speech on short loops of magnetic tape. I thought I'd give this film a try first, never having heard of it. THE NEXT time you settle in your seat to watch a blockbuster movie such as. These film are Japanese with English subtitles, I think a LOT would be lost in any dubbed version. I recall reading in Europe they had these Episodes. release and GKids to forgo a dub once they theatrically released it in the states during their annual Ghibli Fest.I was lucky enough to obtain a set of "Studio Ghibli" anime films on DVD including the some of the best of Myazaki etc. DbZ has 219 episodes and I recall seeing the buu and cell sagas in bits and pieces with the ocean dub on YouTube. Yet it was the fact that this film had a niche target audience of teenagers, dealt with mature themes, didn’t have the pull of big names such as Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, and had a slowly paced plot that forced Disney to do a hard pass of a U.S. I was recently lucky enough to be able to enjoy Only Yesterday dubbed into English for the first time, which really brought the film to life for me. Nevertheless, “Ocean Waves” still stands as a testament to Studio Ghibli’s level of detail and the relatability and difficult subjects that audiences expect from these films.
